Ok, it’s confession time. I love porn. No, I mean I really love it. I spend a lot of time watching it, writing about it and getting off to it which is perfect since that’s pretty much my job. Every year for the past five years I’ve been a jury member for the Good For Her Feminist Porn Awards and every year I wonder: How much porn can one person actually watch before they start to go a little nutty?
Well if you asked my boyfriend the answer would be something like one flick every night for a week, After that, the images start to blur together and lose their, er….shall we say, effectiveness. I, on the other hand, have no such limit and it’s a good thing I don’t because when the post-Valentine’s mad rush towards the FPA’s begins I’m likely to be bringing home a massive pile ranging anywhere from 40-60 dvds. At that point, 2 skin flicks a night is the bare minimum for maximum viewing efficiency and our household goes into porn overdrive mode.
So what does this mean exactly? One has to wonder whether CoCo spends mid-February to mid-March sprawled on her couch furiously masturbating to an ever shifting series of lurid images while sinking further and further into depravity and anti-social psychosis. Thankfully, dear readers, this is not nearly the case (my long-suffering partner may disagree about the depraved part but he enjoys that so whatevs). The truth is that porn simply becomes part of how I go about my day. I watch it while I’m doing the dishes, making crafts, sketching, writing emails and even (on mute) while talking on the phone. I watch it with a critical eye, looking for details like quality of production, chemistry between performers, authentic pleasure representation and sometimes even acting skill. Of course I get off too but that’s really not the point - plus it interferes with my note-taking. As a reviewer I have to be able to determine whether a movie is, in fact, strokable without always actually, y’know, stroking it.
So, how much porn can one person watch without going off the deep end? Well, when that one person is me the answer is A LOT and it seems I haven’t found my limit yet. Every year our submissions grow and there is more awesome feminist porn up for consideration. I’m thrilled to be doing my part to recognize the hard work it takes to create fierce, sexy, feminist smut and to make you, the viewers, aware of it. I will continue to suffer through the bad and get off to the good, for you, dear readers, because I’m altruistic that way. Maybe one year, I really will turn into a quivering pile of jelly but I assure you it will have been worth it!
Love CoCo
