Is “Vagina” Still a Dirty Word?
Tampon ads. Skirting the whole notion of where it happens, pretending that women like to wear white and dance while on their periods, illustrating absorbency of menstrual blood with blue (?) liquid. But we all know what they are avoiding saying. Blood flowing from the vagina.
The what?? Can we say that word in public?
Apparently not.
According to the New York Times, a tampon ad for U by Kotex that mentioned the word vagina was banned from three television networks. Changing the word to “down there” still got it banned from two. What kind of message is this giving us about our bodies? This perpetuates the feeling that many women hold (and that I myself once held) that vaginas are dirty smelly and ugly and not appropriate conversation. Well, it would be useful knowledge for women- and men!- to know that the vagina is a self-maintaining area that is cleaner than our mouths. It also would be great for women to not feel so ashamed about that part of their bodies, not to feel uncomfortable with the idea of a partner pleasuring them orally (and see it as a gift rather then an imposition), to feel ok asking questions and learning about their bodies rather than shame about it. I applaud Kotex, the maker of these ads, in making fun of even its own previous advertising that was evasive in what the commercials were about and for trying to break the taboo on naming what tampons are REALLY for. I am hoping that the day will come soon when the networks will accept the word vagina in their advertising as much as other parts of the body and further the cause of people talking about, knowing about, and feeling good about vaginas!
Check out one of the new Kotex ads here - it’s hilarious!

We have hit warp speed here at FPA headquarters and we couldn’t be happier. As I mentioned in my
