Happy Groundhog Day from Good For Her!

For those of you unfamiliar with this particularly awesome holiday, every February 2nd North Americans everywhere gather around a groundhog burrow, and wait for these adorable furry little critters to predict the weather. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges then spring will come early. If it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will continue for six more weeks. Of course if you happen to be Bill Murray then Groundhog Day is the day you will repeat over and over again until the end of time…. And if you’re me then Groundhog Day is the day you celebrate your birth. Oh yeah!

This year to celebrate my birthday (and hopefully as a nice little precursor to Valentine’s Day) I have decided to share with you my Good For Her Wish List. Let me begin by saying that one of the hardest things about working in a store like Good For Her is not wanting to own everything in sight! There are so many amazing products to choose from, so I’m going to share with you my top 3 extra special Wish List items:

1. The Minx Harness by Aslan Leather

This sleek jock style leather harness has some extra sass in the ass in the form of a corset style back. This harness is modeled after the popular Jaguar harness with a super comfy two strap design in soft supple leather that comes in black or red. But what I love about it most is the back design! Not only is the corset design super sexy, but once you put it on you can tighten the laces to get the absolute perfect fit, and the wider piece of leather in the back offers you just that much more control. This harness will leave you feeling comfortable, in control, and confident that you are the sexiest person in the room! $150

2. The We-Vibe 3

I’m jumping on the remote control vibrator band-wagon with this one, and I’m not turning back! Not only is the We-vibe 3 built with both an internal and an external motor, both with multiple speeds and functions, it also has 40% more power then is predecessor the We-vibe II. It is fully waterproof and comes with a discrete little case for charging (and great for keeping my kittens away!) And best of all it comes with a handy little remote which is great for kicking it up a notch at just the right moment, without having to change positions! But what I would really love to do with this sexy little thing is put it in and wear it out some night, and discretely hand the remote control over to my special someone. I wonder how long it will take them to figure out what they’re turning on… $145

3. The NJoy Eleven

Arguably the most awesome (and I mean the “awe-inspiring” kind of awesome) toy we carry at Good For Her - the enjoy eleven is the holy grail of dildos. I feel like this dildo should come with a warning that reads “Not for Beginners”. Made of pure stainless steel measuring 11″ long (hence the name) and weighing in at 2.75lbs this toy was designed to push your boundaries. Double ended for variety of sensation, size and ease of grip; this toy is shaped so that it can comfortably be used alone or with a friend. The eleven is fantastic for G-Spot stimulation, as it provides firm pressure and a sense of weight. While this might not be an everyday adventure for me, I can certainly imagine some very satisfying exploration with it. And let’s face it, it is quite literally a work of art - and art is always a worthwhile investment. $295

“The G-spot does NOT exist”. Or Does It…..?

Well, the Scientists have concluded: “The G-spot does NOT exist”

A new review of 60 years of sex research and 96 published studies concluded that “Without a doubt, a discreet anatomic entity called the G-spot does not exist.” Dr. Amichai Kilchevsky is the lead author of the review, published January 12th in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

That is interesting. I know that I have one. And I know many women who have one. Many have come to our workshops and/or come to shop at Good For Her for this reason and come back later to tell us that they found it. What is the disconnect?

First of all, Kilchevsky stated that a majority of women believe a G-spot actually exists, although some of those women also say they can’t locate it. This is very true! Just because they cannot find it, does not mean it does not exist. In my experience, most women and their partners have not found the G-spot because they are either looking too deeply or not exerting enough pressure. It is often described as 2-3 inches inside. Well for some of us, especially those who have given birth, it can be as shallow as the beginning of the first knuckle of the finger. For this reason I appreciate that they actually suggest renaming it the G-area, or G-region, instead. This area runs along the front wall of the vagina, closest to the urethra. It is the urethral sponge, that surrounds the urethra, that is actually the sensitive area. This is why many women need pressure- sometimes a surprising amount which they may never try - in order to feel the sensations. And many women notice an urge to urinate with G-spot play, so they stop the pressure. If they understood to breathe through it, they might feel the wonders of what many women - not all - enjoy. The location around the urethra also explains why one of the studies cited that biopsies of tissue taken from the vaginal wall did not find different tissue in the area. That is because the G-spot is not IN the vagina, you feel it THROUGH the front wall of the vagina.

I also want to point out that not all women who can feel their G-spot like the sensation. Just as I have met a few women who do not like having their clitoris stimulated(!) We are all different and let’s not describe it as the center of the universe and make women feel incomplete if they do not enjoy it. Life and sex can be grand without G-spot play. I am a believer in making sure that folks at least know where it is so they can decide if they want to play with it or not.

Finally, Kilchevsky claims that “women who can’t achieve orgasm through vaginal penetration don’t have anything wrong with them.” Of course they don’t, because only 30% of women can achieve orgasm through penetration alone. But let’s not confuse the issue - you can have a G-spot and feel lots of pleasure and still not orgasm. That is akin to saying that just because one does not orgasm during a backrub, it must not be pleasurable or worth doing.

Science has its merits. I fully support scientific studies to help us learn more about sexuality and other realms. But let’s make sure that we are using good parameters and educating people properly about finding their G-spots including the proper tools (like the Orchid or the Gigi) before evaluating whether they actually have one.
